2021 AID FOR THE TIGRAY REGION — TOGETHER FOR ETHIOPIA
Since November 2020 an armed conflict has continued in Ethiopia, in the Tigray region. The conflict, which has caused thousands of deaths and large-scale destruction, has displaced more than 2 million people and caused more than ten thousand people to flee to neighbouring Sudan. The conflict has deepened tensions between ethnic groups and worsened the humanitarian crisis in the country. The UN and local authorities say that more than 4.5 million people, the majority of the population of Tigray, urgently need help. However, the current situation is also having an impact on Ethiopia’s neighbouring states, Sudan and Eritrea, in a way that could destabilize this part of Africa.
TOGETHER FOR ETHIOPIA
Five Slovak non-governmental organizations — eRko – Dobrá novina, Mary’s Meals Slovensko, the Integra Foundation, SAVIO and the Slovak Catholic Charity, with the support of the Platform of Development Organizations (Ambrela) — responded to this situation and launched the Together for Ethiopia initiative. Its aim was to raise funds and support humanitarian activities that would provide direct aid to the people affected by the armed conflict. The collection ran from 22 March 2021 to 25 April 2021. The final amount of gifts earmarked for humanitarian aid reached EUR 41,447.61. The organizations eRko – Dobrá novina, the Slovak Catholic Charity and SAVIO contributed to the gifts raised with a total sum of EUR 35,000. The initiative was also supported by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic with a financial contribution of EUR 20,000.
The total volume of aid that has gone from Slovakia to humanitarian assistance for the people of the Tigray region thus amounts to EUR 96,447.61.

With the money raised, SAVIO supported a Salesian project in the Tigray region — in the cities of Mekelle, Adigrat, Adwa and Shire. The Salesians, in cooperation with the Italian organization VIS (Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo), distribute food, water and other vital supplies to more than 3,000 families every day. They are being helped by pupils from the technical schools run by the Salesians. One example is the Salesian community in the city of Adwa, which — together with the Sisters of Mother Teresa — bakes more than 2,000 loaves of bread a day for the hungry.
The Together for Ethiopia joint initiative has ended, but our cooperation with the Salesians and the VIS organization in Ethiopia continues. The situation in Tigray has not improved even after five months of intense fighting. Reports from the media and observers from international organizations, arriving since access to the region was eased, speak of terrible tragedies that the civilian population — especially women and girls — is facing because of attacks by armed forces and militias.
