From the Streets to the School Bench

Trimester exams have begun at Bosco Boys

Exam season started this week at the Kenyan Salesian centre Bosco Boys. Pupils of the primary school (Don Bosco Primary School) as well as those of the lower secondary school (Don Bosco Junior Secondary School) face a week of written exams that will test their knowledge and readiness. For many of them, just being able to attend school at all is already a huge achievement.

From the streets straight into the school benches

The children who today, pen in hand, are sitting their tests have difficult stories behind them. Most of them grow up in slums or used to survive on the streets of the capital, Nairobi. The Child Adoption in Kenya programme, run by our SAVIO o. z. civic association, offers them a helping hand. It is not just about food and a roof over their heads — above all, it is about education that helps them stand on their own feet.

How does it all work?

You may be wondering what the term “adoption” actually means here. It is not adoption in the legal sense — it is long-term support of a specific child. Slovak “adoptive parents” send a contribution of 35 EUR/month, with which we cover for the children:

School and supplies: School fees, textbooks, notebooks and everything they need for their studies.

Food: Regular meals.

Healthcare: Routine treatment and medicines that their families could not otherwise afford.

More than just money

Mutual correspondence is an important part of the programme. Letters from Slovak donors serve the students at Bosco Boys as motivation to achieve better results. Knowing that someone far away is supporting them in their studies helps them get through tougher moments too — like this week of exams.

Thank you for being in this with us

To all adoptive parents goes one big THANK YOU. Without you these children would not have a chance to sit exams, get an education and dream of a better future.

We are rooting for all the boys and girls at Bosco Boys — may they do their best on those exams. We are proud of you!
