We are delighted with our project in Kenya, under which we are planting avocado and macadamia trees. At three locations — Meru, Makuyu and Kitale — farmers interested in growing avocados and macadamia nuts were registered at the end of last year. A total of 1,421 people signed up. Field agricultural workers visited every one of them to verify that the registered farmers had land suitable for growing the trees and a reliable source of water, and to explain how to prepare the soil for planting. The farmers were then invited to a specialised training course on growing avocado and macadamia trees. In March, 1,055 farmers took part. 40,000 seedlings in total were delivered to all three locations, and they are now being distributed among those who completed the training. The farmers will take the saplings home and plant them on their land. Field workers will then visit them again to check on the growth and provide advice on care. We thank SlovakAid for financial support of the project worth EUR 250,000.
