Preparing volunteers in the spirit of responsibility and child protection
The past weekend was marked by personal growth, learning and the strengthening of relationships. The volunteers came together to prepare for the next stage of their service, to grow in expertise and in the values that lie at the heart of Salesian pastoral work.
The programme focused on developmental psychology, giving the participants a better understanding of the world of the children and young people they are called to serve. The programme also included presentations from three volunteers who are preparing for a career in teaching.
An important part of the weekend was a deeper look at the Salesian Code, especially the themes of the code of ethics and child protection. These areas form the essential foundation of a safe and responsible environment in which children and young people can develop in a healthy way. The volunteers had space to ask questions, to discuss specific situations from practice and to realise how important clearly set boundaries are in work with young people.
An experience that shapes a calling to service
The whole programme was guided expertly and with great sensitivity by the Salesian prevention specialists Katka Jánošová and Mária Soročinová. Mária, a former volunteer herself, also shared her missionary experience from working in Košice, in Luník IX, where she worked with children and young people in a socially disadvantaged environment. Her authentic testimony gave the future volunteers a valuable look at both the challenges and the joys of service, and encouraged them as they prepare for their own commitment.
The weekend was not only about learning, though. Shared games, experiences and informal conversations helped build trust, strengthened relationships and reinforced a sense of community. The volunteers left not only with new knowledge, but also with a clearer idea of the next steps on their journey.
Our preparation continues; the next joint meeting of the volunteers will take place in Galanta from 17 to 19 April 2026.
